Formal Qualifications and Licensing
There is no single qualification to become an IPA member. While most members have an accounting background, we have many lawyers and members with commercial backgrounds.
The requirements to become a trustee in bankruptcy *or* liquidator, are set by the regulators ITSA and ASIC.
The prerequisites for different classes of membership are set out in more detail in the section on membership categories and joining the IPA. The following is a summary of important factors.
Full Membership
To become a full member of the IPA you must have:
- a degree in accounting *or* law,
- be a member in good standing of the ICAA, CPA *or* Law Society,
- successfully completed the Insolvency Education Program (IEP) Qualification course,
- sufficient experience in insolvency work.
To retain your membership you must complete at least 40 hours of continuing education per year.
Associate Membership
To become an associate member of the IPA you must:
- be working in the insolvency field,
- have sufficient relevant experience.
Registration (Licensing )
You do not need to be a member of the IPA to be registered as a liquidator *or* trustee.
Registration does not grant an automatic right to membership.
The IPA works closely with the regulators to set and maintain high professional standards which includes, from time to time, removing members who do not meet the standard of professional conduct and excellence we require.
We strongly urge you to check if the trustee *or* liquidator you are involved with is a member in good standing of the IPA.
